Visiting Paris is about to get a bit more expensive as the city raised taxes on hotels and other accommodations at the beginning of the year. The increase, which went into effect on Jan. 1, charges travelers up to nearly 200 percent more in nightly tax to stay in 2024, Atout France, the country’s tourism development agency confirmed to Travel + Leisure. The tax increase varies based on the type of accommodation. The largest increase is for travelers staying in “palaces.” Those tourists will have to pay a nightly tax of €14.95 ($16.38), a 199 percent increase compared to the 2023 rate of €5 ($5.48). Travelers in 5-star accommodations will have to pay a nightly rate of €10.73 ($11.75), a 186 percent increase compared to the 2023 rate of €3.75 ($4.11), and travelers in 4-star hotels will have to pay a new rate of €8.13 ($8.91), a 182 percent increase compared to the 2023 rate of €2.88 ($3.15). Travelers staying in 1-star hotels, holiday villages, guest rooms, or hostels will have a more modest increase with the new rate of €2.60 ($2.85), compared to the 2023 rate of €1 ($1.10). The decision to raise taxes comes months ahead of the much-anticipated Paris Olympics. Hotel prices have been on the rise leading up to the games, averaging more than 300 percent higher than normal for this summer. Overall, Paris expects more than 11 million visitors to head to the city for the event, which kicks off July 26. Paris is also not alone in raising taxes. Amsterdam similarly approved a city tourist tax increase for this year, requiring visitors to pay 12.5 percent. The tax will apply to both travelers staying overnight and visiting on cruise ships. Some destinations are adding new taxes for travelers, like Iceland, which will start charging travelers in an effort to support the country’s climate and sustainability goals, and Venice, which plans to implement a fee for day trippers this spring in addition to the tax it already charges overnight guests.
Another rough day for travelers as airlines cancel more than 2,200 flights

Widespread flight cancellations continued Tuesday as a winter storm pummeled the eastern U.S., causing headaches for thousands of travelers. As of 4:20 p.m. Eastern Time, airlines had scratched more than 2,200 scheduled U.S. flights, while roughly 6,800 flights were delayed, according to tracking service FlightAware. Thousands more trips were canceled or delayed over the weekend as harsh winter weather, including freezing temperatures, snow and strong winds, enveloped states in the Midwest, Northeast and South. Among the hardest hit airlines is Southwest Airlines, which on Tuesday scrapped more than 400 flights, or 11% of its daily schedule, while another 909 were delayed. Cancellations were also high at Alaska Airlines and United Airlines as they continued to deal with concerns over the safety of some Boeing 737 Max 9 jets following a mid-air incident last week in which a "door plug" fell off an Alaska Airlines plane. Unlike in 2022, when airline mismanagement and staffing shortages affected holiday travel, bad weather is the main culprit behind the current woes. "The winter weather is the primary catalyst, but the big challenge is that this weather has been so intense and extensive," airline Henry Harteveldt, president of Atmosphere Research Group, told CBS MoneyWatch. The schedule disruptions are severe enough that staffing is starting to run thin across airlines, while de-icing fluid was also in short supply Tuesday, Harteveldt added. "When you've got delays at major airports, everything just gets spread out across the entire aviation network and there's a waterfall effect," he said. Travel industry expert Scott Keyes said the true test of airlines' readiness will be in how they rebound once the weather eases in the coming days. "For now the cancellations and delays are understandable and forgivable. In the next days, when the weather improves, all eyes will be on airlines to see if they are able to bounce back quickly or if they suffer from more cancellations that are the result of a lack of preparation," he said. By contrast, airlines will have to consider future investments to preserve their operational efficiency in the face of worsening winter storms. "Once airlines and airpots get through this latest bout of bad weather, they need to really sit down and think about how they prepare for a future where bad winter weather storms may be more frequent, last longer and potentially have even greater temperature and weather extremes than we have seen," Harteveldt said. In airlines' favor on the staffing front is the fact that this weather event is occurring in the middle, not the end, of the month. Federal law caps the total number of monthly hours that crews can work, including flight attendants and pilots. If it were closer to the end of the calendar month, crews could be at greater risk of maxing out their hours. For example, time spent waiting for aircraft to be de-iced before takeoff is applied toward employees' schedule caps. "I am concerned if we see bad weather happen again that this could have a cascading effect and we could see worse problems later in the month," Harteveldt said. When bad weathers occurs, travelers should download their carrier's app and pay attention to airline updates, he noted. If checking bags is a must, keeping essentials in a carry-on is advisable in case you end up stuck at the airport.

South Korea’s two new visa programmes; know what it means for Indian tourists

South Korea is responding to the global interest in its culture, driven by the success of K-pop and K-dramas, by introducing two new visas in 2024—the digital nomad visa (workation visa) and the K-culture training visa (Hallyu visa). The goal is to attract millions of foreign tourists this year, and transform South Korea into a preferred international tourist destination. If reports are to go by, South Korea is implementing reforms to streamline travel within the country. The introduction of foreign mobile payments and a traveler mobility app aims to facilitate shopping and easy transportation for international visitors. English versions of navigation systems are also in the works. All these will collectively contribute to South Korea's vision of offering a more accessible and enjoyable experience for tourists. What are the two new visa programmes all about? - South Korea’s Digital Nomad Visa or the Workation Visa South Korea recently introduced the workation visa that encourages extended stays for foreign nationals. This visa combines work and travel, allowing visitors to stay for up to one year, in contrast to the 90-day limit on tourist visas. To qualify, applicants need one year of work experience in their industry, affiliated with international companies. The visa is open to families, except for children turning 18 or older, and requires applicants to earn double South Korea's gross national product, maintain personal medical insurance, and secure home evacuation coverage exceeding 100 million won ($7,750) in case of emergencies. Workation visa holders cannot engage in profit-making activities or work for local companies as it requires a separate visa for such endeavors. Applications can be submitted at Korean Embassies, and visa changes are possible for those on limited stays who meet necessary conditions. - K-culture training visa or Hallyu visa South Korea’s Hallyu visa or the K-culture training visa will allow foreign individuals enrolled in cultural academies to stay for a maximum of two years. The visa aims to provide candidates who are passionate about Korean culture, K-pop, and related fields, with firsthand knowledge from experts in Korean music, drama, film, animation, and gaming industries. This extensive, hands-on training program offers insight into the inner workings of the Korean entertainment scene and content creation. The Hallyu visa, unlike the E-6 visa, which requires trainee contracts with Korean entertainment firms, simplifies the process by requiring applicants to register at approved Korean institutes under the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

A unique and distinctive marathon, shedding light on the impact of climate change on Himalayan glaciers in Ladakh, will be organized on February 20 on the frozen Pangong Lake near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China. The event will mark its second edition and will take place at an elevation of nearly 4,350 m above sea level, showcasing the unique challenges of running on a frozen lake. Organised by the Adventure Sports Foundation of Ladakh (ASFL) in collaboration with the Tourism Department and Ladakh administration, this marathon stands out for its commitment to sustainability. Revealing more about this, the organisers added that the event will take place with a sustainable approach, ensuring no use of plastic water bottles and waste-generating products are used during the event. In a message, the organisers elaborated on the unifying power of sports to bring together people of diverse races and religions, especially in addressing larger issues such as the climate crisis. The Pangong Frozen Lake Marathon, a unique initiative, is deliberately limited to 50 runners of all abilities for this year. Globally, frozen lake marathons, like the Iceberg Frozen Lake Marathon in Norway, have gained recognition as thrilling adventure activities. Running in winter poses inherent challenges, but doing so on a frozen lake adds an extra layer of excitement for adventurers from across the country and the world. A delegation led by Chamba Tsetan, the founder of the Adventure Sports Federation of Ladakh, met with Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor, Brig BD Mishra (retd), to discuss the upcoming marathon. The event, officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Highest Frozen Lake Half Marathon, aims to boost winter tourism in Changthang and promote sustainability on a global scale.

The Bihar Forest and Environment department is hosting the Nagi Bird Festival in Jamui, Bihar, for three days, starting from today. This initiative follows the success of an international bird workshop conducted by the Bihar Government, whereas the festival's primary goal is to advance bird conservation while educating the public on migratory birds and their habitats. Referring to this, Secretary of Forest Department Bandana Preyasi informed that the primary mission of this festival is to raise awareness about migratory birds, highlighting their rarity and their presence in the region for approximately two and a half months. The official added that such an initiative will likely help to transform this region into a robust eco-tourism site. She adds, "The Nagi Bird Festival not only enlightens people about these migratory birds and their conservation but also serves as a platform to promote tourism, leveraging the rarity of these birds as a unique attraction. Their brief stay of two and a half months turns the region into a strong eco-tourism hub." Preyasi further added that the immediate advantage of this kind of an initiative is that it will lead to increased awareness about migratory birds and their conservation efforts among the people here. Additionally, the festival is expected to stimulate eco-tourism, thereby creating employment opportunities for the local population, who could serve as guides for wildlife photographers and tourists. To heighten awareness about the Nagi Bird Festival, the state department of forest, environment, and climate change earlier launched publicity vans from Aranya Bhawan. These vans travelled from Patna to Jamui, educating people about bird conservation, with a particular focus on migratory species and their habitats. The 2024 Nagi Bird Festival's mascot, the Picu pochard, was unveiled during this campaign.

BCAS directs airlines: Checked-in baggage must reach passengers within 30 minutes

In a recent airline update, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has mandated airlines to ensure that the initial checked-in bag appears on the baggage carousel within 10 minutes of landing, with the final one arriving within 30 minutes. Yes, getting baggage after landing at the destination airport has always been chaotic and one of the prime issues for the travellers. But now, BAPS has released an order for all the airlines to deliver the baggage within 30 minutes, to reduce the waiting period at the baggage claim area. Airlines have been granted a ten-day window, ending on February 26, to implement measures to follow these timelines. The countdown commences once the aircraft's engine is shut down following its landing and docking at a parking bay. Baggage claims at airports present myriad challenges for travellers, ranging from delays to lost luggage. Despite technological advancements, issues persist, causing frustration and inconvenience. Long wait times are a common complaint, exacerbated by overcrowded terminals and slow baggage handling processes. Compounding the problem are instances of mishandled or damaged luggage, leaving passengers disheartened and inconvenienced. Moreover, unclear signage and insufficient staff exacerbate the confusion, making the retrieval process even more daunting. These issues not only disrupt travel plans but also impact the overall experience, tarnishing the reputation of airlines and airports. Addressing baggage claim inefficiencies requires a multi-faceted approach involving improved logistics, enhanced technology, and better communication strategies. By prioritising these areas, airports and airlines can alleviate passenger concerns and ensure a smoother, more pleasant travel experience for all. Source: Times of India

March 2024 US Visa Bulletin: Good news for Green Card applicants from India

As March 2024 unfolds, the Visa Bulletin becomes a focal point of attention for immigrants, employers, and immigration advocates, each eagerly awaiting its release. This bulletin is not merely a routine update; it's a vital compass guiding individuals through the labyrinthine landscape of the U.S. immigration system. Its arrival heralds insights into visa availability and priority dates, information that can significantly influence immigration strategies and timelines. For those navigating the complexities of immigration, the Visa Bulletin is an indispensable tool, offering clarity and direction in an often opaque process. Things to keep in mind: The Dates for Filing Visa Applications chart outlines the earliest dates when applicants can submit their adjustment of status applications or immigrant visa applications. These dates are crucial for individuals planning their immigration process, as filing too early or too late can impact the timing of their application processing. The Application Final Action Dates chart indicates when the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) or the Department of State can approve adjustment of status applications or immigrant visa applications, leading to the issuance of permanent residence (green card). These dates determine the eligibility of applicants to move forward in the immigration process. Key highlights from the March 2024 Visa Bulletin: In the March 2024 Visa Bulletin, several notable updates and trends emerge, particularly concerning employment-based preference categories: Limited movement in priority dates: Green Card applicants from India get the sweet spot. Despite notable progress in the January bulletin, the February bulletin showed minimal movement in priority dates for most employment-based preference categories. However, Indian applicants saw a one-month advancement in the EB-1 category, while EB-2 and EB-3 categories remained stagnant. Priority date cutoffs: To file an EB adjustment application in March 2024, applicants must have a priority date earlier than the listed date for their preference category and country. The final action dates are crucial for processing immigrant visa or green card applications. Progress in the immigration process depends on these dates, varying by visa category and country of chargeability. Source: Times of India BACK TO NEWS

If reports are to go by, the Dubai International Airport (DXB), renowned as the busiest hub for international travel globally, revealed that India is in the leading position for the highest number of passengers passing through its gates. The total traffic amounted to 11.9 million guests! As of 2023, DXB boasts connectivity to 262 destinations across 104 countries through 102 international carriers. India secured the top spot among destination countries, with traffic totaling 11.9 million guests, followed by Saudi Arabia with 6.7 million guests and the UK with 5.9 million guests.
The beautiful locales including hill stations, beaches and backwater destinations in various parts make it the ideal location for international meets, says Tourism Minister PA Mohamed Riyas. In its efforts to make Kerala a Soft Power hub, the government has proposed to introduce some upfront initiatives for promoting Kerala as a preferred venue for global conferences, said PA Mohamed Riyas, Tourism Minister. Kerala has immense opportunities in this segment given its picturesque landscape, eclectic history and rich cultural heritage, he said. The Minister was speaking after inaugurating the two-day annual conference of the Soft Power Club, a leading global organisation headed by Francesco Rutelli, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Italy, at Technopark here. The beautiful locales including hill stations, beaches and backwater destinations in various parts make it the most ideal location for international meets. The soft power at our disposal -- tourism -- is the most potent component and it has to be harnessed in a sustainable manner, he said. Over the centuries, the State has leveraged soft power in its evolution as an inclusive society and social and communal harmony reinforces its position as a soft power hub, the Minister said. G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant, who made a presentation on India, said the country blends both its soft and hard powers to project itself and to ensure that the nation retains its very unique civilizational approach. Introducing the Soft Power Club, Francesco Rutelli stressed the need for promoting the value of international cooperation on strategic issues in the difficult times. He said building resilient stories of soft power involves inculcating resilient values, driving it through policy, recognising the role of social media as a soft power tool and bringing the subject into public discourse. Highlighting that soft power is tool for reputation, international competitiveness and economic growth formations, Rutelli said that the Soft Power Club meet will discuss the persisting and potential role of trade in the changing international landscape.

Hotels set for 11-13% revenue growth next fiscal on a high base

Hotel industry in India is slated for a healthy revenue growth of 11-13% in the next fiscal after a strong 15-17% growth in the current fiscal, backed by steady domestic demand and ramp up in foreign traveller demand. The strong demand dynamics along with modest new supply will keep the operating performance of the industry healthy over the near term. The healthy operating performance will augur well for the industry profitability where the earnings before interest, taxes and depreciation (Ebitda) will continue the strong momentum over the current and the next fiscal. This, along with limited capital expenditure, will keep the credit profiles strong. A CRISIL Ratings analysis of branded hotel companies with ~70,000 rooms across categories, indicates as much. Says Anand Kulkarni, Director, CRISIL Ratings, “The domestic travel demand, which remained a key driver this fiscal, will sustain next fiscal as well. This momentum will be supported by healthy economic activity which drives business demand and continuing leisure travel demand which reinvigorated post the pandemic. While the demand will remain strong, the growth rate is expected to taper off next fiscal due to high base. Consequently, the average room rates (ARRs) are expected to grow 5-7% next fiscal against 10-12% this fiscal and the occupancy is expected to remain healthy at current levels of 73-74%.” On the other hand, the foreign tourist arrivals in India, despite a growth this fiscal, are estimated to remain ~10%1 below pre-pandemic level and pick-up in the same will provide fillip to the hotel demand next fiscal. Apart from the aforementioned factors, demand in the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and events) segment is also expected to remain healthy as corporates have resumed their activities post the pandemic induced hiatus. In addition to demand, favourable supply situation is one of the critical drivers of the strong performance of the industry. Says Nitin Kansal, Director, CRISIL Ratings, “Greenfield capex is expected to remain muted with the new room addition remaining at 4-5% per fiscal over the next couple of years. While the demand rebound has boosted the industry sentiments, the cost dynamics still remain a constraining factor for new capex. High land costs, sizeable increase in construction costs, long gestation period coupled with cyclicality in the sector is resulting in cautious new capex in the sector. Therefore, brands may keep adding rooms through management contracts, which will limit their upfront capital costs.” Effect of conducive demand supply dynamics is also visible on the operating profitability of the industry. The ARR-driven revenue growth typically translates into better profitability, given that operating costs do not increase proportionately. Plus, hotels had taken several cost efficiency measures, such as better manpower planning and optimisation in food and beverage expenses, in the past two fiscals. While costs are expected to inch up gradually, operating leverage will help maintain strong operating profitability, at 32-33% over the current and the next fiscal — similar to last fiscal and ~1,000 bps higher than the pre-pandemic level (annexure 1). In this milieu, credit profiles of the hotel companies will continue to improve. For instance, interest coverage is expected to rise to ~4.3 times and ~5.5 times this and next fiscal which will be higher than ~3.2 times last fiscal. The debt to Ebitda ratio is seen improving to ~2.2 times this fiscal followed by below 2 times in the next from ~2.9 times last fiscal. While all the ingredients of the sectors are well poised for sustained growth over the near to medium term, any economic slowdown and its impact on business travel, especially on a global scale, will bear watching.
In a tragic incident on Thursday, one foreign tourist lost his life, while five individuals were successfully rescued after a massive avalanche that struck the ski slopes in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir. As per the reports, the avalanche hit the upper reaches of Apharwat peak in the Afarwat area of Gulmarg, where rescue teams swiftly responded to conduct safety operations. The unfortunate event coincided with the ongoing fourth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg. Initial reports indicate that seven foreign skiers were trapped in the avalanche, which indicates the perilous conditions that are faced by winter sports enthusiasts in the region. The rescue and search operations are being conducted by the Army personnel and a patrolling team from the Jammu and Kashmir administration.Furthermore, reports also have it that another avalanche disrupted the Sindh stream in the Sonamarg area of Jammu and Kashmir the day before, which altered the water body's course. Striking the Hung area of Sonamarg on the Srinagar-Leh road, the avalanche obstructed the flow of water in the Sindh stream, prompting a diversion in its path. To restore the waterbody to its original course, authorities deployed heavy machinery to clear the debris left by the avalanche. The recent snowfall in Kashmir, ranging from ‘moderate’ to ‘heavy’ over the past three days, has heightened the risk of avalanches in the hilly and mountainous regions of the valley. These incidents indicate the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions, necessitating continuous vigilance and proactive measures to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.

International travel necessitates careful consideration of various factors, and obtaining the right type of visa is a crucial aspect. Among the options available, the distinction between a single-entry visa and a multiple-entry visa plays a significant role in shaping the travel experience. The choice between a single-entry and a multiple-entry visa depends on individual travel needs and plans. Careful consideration of factors such as the purpose of the trip, frequency of travel, and anticipated duration of stay is crucial to making an informed decision and ensuring a seamless international travel experience. Entry limitations Single-entry visa: As the name suggests, a single-entry visa permits the traveller to enter the host country only once within a specific period. Once the individual exits the country, the visa becomes invalid, and re-entry is not permitted without obtaining a new visa. Multiple-entry visa: In contrast, a multiple-entry visa offers the traveller the flexibility to enter and exit the host country multiple times within a predetermined time frame, offering convenience for those with frequent travel needs.

Nepal is all set to introduce a mandatory safety measure for all those climbers who head on to the challenging journey to Mount Everest, the world's highest peak. If reports are to go by, beginning this Spring, all climbers will be required to carry an electronic chip, a rule that aims to enhance rescue operations in case of emergencies during the ascent or descent of the 8,849 metres (29,032 ft) high mountain. As such, the government is in the process of devising a regulation that will mandate the use of such a chip. Reports add that it’s anticipated that this initiative will come into effect from the upcoming Spring season, which will be coinciding with the commencement of the climbing season on Mt. Everest. This period marks the opening of the limited time frame suitable for ascending to exceptionally high altitudes. With the opening of the narrow climbing window that occurs during the Spring season, thousands of climbers worldwide, including those from India and Nepal, are drawn to Mt. Everest, also known as Sagarmatha in Nepali. While many manage to successfully reach the summit, reports of unfortunate incidents of fatalities and serious injuries have also been recorded over the years. Since 1953, Nepal government data indicates that around 300 individuals have lost their lives on Mt. Everest. Further reports add that in the Spring season of 2023 alone, up to May 22, 12 climbers, including four Nepalese, one Indian, and one Chinese, lost their lives during expeditions to Mt. Everest. The challenging terrain and extreme weather conditions, including snowstorms and avalanches, make search and rescue operations from the Everest base camp, which is situated at an altitude of 18,000 ft. To address safety concerns, the Nepali government plans to provide electronic chips to all climbers at a nominal cost, which as of now, is estimated to be between USD 10 to USD 15. Rakesh Gurung, the Director at the Department of Tourism, emphasised that the fitting these chips into the climbers' jackets will not only contribute to safer expeditions, but will also facilitate more efficient emergency rescue operations. Reports add that some reputable climbing agencies have already adopted this safety measure by providing electronic chips to their climbers ahead of the official implementation of the rule.

Sikkim is all poised to undergo a transformation in connectivity. It’s the only Indian state that doesn't have railway access, and this is soon going to change. As per the latest news reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the state's inaugural railway station on Monday, February 26. Deputy Railway Manager of Alipurduar, Amarjeet Agrawal, highlighted the dual significance of the Rangpo station for Sikkim and India. He explained that the railway station will serve both tourism and defense purposes. If reports are to go by, this ambitious railway project will unfold in three phases: the Sevoke to Rangpo rail project in the first phase, Rangpo to Gangtok in the second phase, and finally, Gangtok to Nathula in the third phase. Sikkim officially became India's 22nd state on May 16, 1975, following the abolition of the monarchy. The Sivok-Rangpo railway project spans 45 km and predominantly features tunnels, bridges, and open cutting/filling of station yards. An outstanding aspect of this project will be the application of the latest NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) technique for tunneling, with tunnels covering 86% of the total length and bridges making up 5%. Reportedly, the upcoming railway station in Sikkim will mark a significant milestone in the broader Sivok-Rangpo railway project, promising enhanced connectivity and accessibility for the region. The development reflects not only a groundbreaking achievement for Sikkim, but will also contribute to India's railway infrastructure by introducing innovative elements like its first underground railway station.

Sri Lanka has instructed thousands of Russians and Ukrainians residing in the country on expired extended visas due to the Ukraine conflict to depart within a fortnight, as per officials. The move follows public outcry on social media regarding Russian-operated businesses engaging in illicit activities and enforcing a "whites only" practice, barring locals from entry. Immigration authorities have informed Sri Lanka's Tourism Ministry that Russian and Ukrainian visitors must leave the nation within two weeks starting from February 23, as their visas have expired, officials quoted by news agency PTI disclosed. The Sri Lankan Tourism Ministry revealed it had received grievances about Russians and Ukrainians overstaying in Sri Lanka and establishing restaurants and nightclubs. They allegedly employed foreigners and utilized non-local payment methods, bypassing domestic systems. Sri Lankan Tourism Minister Harin Fernando informed the Daily Mirror that complaints had been lodged about certain Russians operating illegal enterprises in the southern region of the country. He noted that raids were conducted following consultations with the immigration department, as reported by an international publication. However, a notice from President Ranil Wickremesinghe's office instructed an investigation into the decision to mandate the departure of Ukrainians and Russians without Cabinet endorsement. According to the President's Media division, PTI reported that the Sri Lankan government has not officially decided to revoke the visa extensions granted to Ukrainian and Russian tourists. To revitalize the tourism sector, Sri Lanka, grappling with its worst economic downturn since 2022, initiated visa-on-arrival for 30 days and allowed extensions of up to six months, as per The Independent.

Nepal embraces digitalisation: Trekking permits go online

In a ground-breaking move, Nepal has bid farewell to decades of paper-based trekking permit applications, ushering in a new era with the introduction of an online system. Effective since February 23, 2024, this transition is geared towards simplifying the permit issuance process for foreign visitors, bringing about time savings for both trekkers and government officials. Previously, the cumbersome process involved physically visiting immigration offices and navigating queues. With the advent of the online system, trekkers can now conveniently apply for permits from the comfort of their homes through a dedicated digital platform. Despite the positive shift, there is a current limitation in the payment process, restricting transactions to Nepali payment channels such as mobile banking apps or local platforms like Connect IPS, E-sewa, and Khalti. Recognising this constraint, the government has expressed its intention to address the issue through legislative changes, potentially allowing payments in foreign currencies. Furthermore, in adherence to regulations prohibiting solo trekking in restricted areas, permits for these regions will continue to be exclusively issued through authorised tour operators. The tourism industry has warmly welcomed this digital transformation. Nilhari Bastola, President of the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, lauds the convenience and efficiency brought about by the online system, despite acknowledging an initial learning curve. He also highlights the positive impact on reducing bureaucratic hurdles. This online platform represents the latest in a series of initiatives aimed at facilitating visitor entry into Nepal. Notably, the recent implementation of an electronic travel authorization (ETA) system allows tour operators to electronically obtain visas for their clients, eliminating the need for physical visits to immigration offices.

Good news for Indian students who are keen to go to Japan for further studies. As per the latest news reports, The Japanese Ambassador to India, Hiroshi F Suzuki, has extended a warm invitation to Indian students and the youthful population, encouraging them to explore educational opportunities in Japan. In an interview with YouTuber Mayo San, Suzuki said that it’s quite simple to acquire a student visa for Japan. All one has to do is present a student ID card, and they are good to go. Highlighting the streamlined visa process, along with an abundance of skill development programs and promising job prospects, the envoy stressed about the vast potential awaiting Indian aspirants in the ‘land of the rising sun.’ Suzuki conveyed a specific message to the people of India, especially the youth, urging them to consider studying and working in Japan. He specifically addressed students, assuring them that obtaining a visa is remarkably straightforward, requiring only the presentation of a student ID. Furthermore, Suzuki shared a notable development in visa regulations for Indian students, stating that within three years of graduating from Indian universities, students can now submit certificates of student status or graduation instead of documenting financial capability when applying for a single-entry visa for short-term stays with tourism as the purpose. When asked about the striking differences between Japan and India, Suzuki pointed out language as a significant contrast. He highlighted Japan's unified writing system compared to India's diverse linguistic landscape, marvelling at the multitude of different writings in India, likening each state to a distinct country with its own unique identity.

Here\'s how tech, AI are transforming travel insurance

Half a decade back, travel insurance was taken mainly against loss of baggage or to compensate for trip cancellation expenses. But with marketplaces and travel aggregators providing comprehensive and competitive offers, insurance packages can now be compared, chosen and bought online. The flexibility and accessibility is expected to bring more takers and a rapid market expansion and growth. "As per the General Insurance Council report, last year, it was a 950-crore industry for overseas travel insurance and this year, three years after the pandemic, the expected growth is between 15-20 pc," says Manas Kapoor, Business Head - Travel Insurance, Policybazaar.com, a leading insurance aggregator. With InsurTech booming, and Bima Sugam, a digital platform accelerating the awareness and demand, says Sanjiv Bajaj, Jt. Chairman & MD, BajajCapital Insurance Broking Ltd. "By 2025, the market could reach an estimated ₹40,000 crore, and in 2030, forecasts anticipate a staggering ₹1,25,000 crore market," he shares the projection. The industry is largely around individual/family users who travel internationally once a year, prefer multi-trip insurance for cost savings and convenience. They combine floater plans with benefits that are mostly medical-related, and others like travel cancellations and loss of personal belongings. Single trips that come with flexibility and customisation are for millennials and Gen-Z cohorts and the senior citizen plans with higher pre-existing diseases (PED) coverage and lastly student-specific plans. There has been a significant drop in frequent flyers after the pandemic who opt for higher coverage. But domestic travel is picking up along with staycations and workcation plans. Especially after the IRDAI introduced new travel insurance guidelines, standardising coverage options and promoting transparency. Micro-insurance plans and pay-as-you-go options that cater to budget-conscious travelers, cancel-for-any-reason coverage and additional add-ons are some of the emerging, popular trends in travel insurance. Post-pandemic, consumer behavior has changed from traditional saver to spender, says Abraham Alapatt, President & Group Head – Marketing, Service Quality, Value Added Services & Innovation, Thomas Cook and SOTC Travel, "Our business split is 70% FIT (individual travel) and 30% GIT (group travel) for domestic, for long haul 75(GIT):25(FIT) and short haul: 50:50. Our individual travel/FIT segment is witnessing a steady growth in domestic and short haul compared to pre pandemic levels. The trending "YOLO" (You Only Live Once) mindset has been fueling the desire for experience/bucket list-led travel too." Of all the pandemic outcomes, heightened risk perception has worked in favour of the insurance industry. "Over 90% of Indians now prioritise travel insurance," says Sanjiv Bajaj. The challenges are still many and manifold. When it comes to insurance, people fail to read the 'deductibles' in fine print. As a result, there is an expectation mismatch; this leads to overconsumption too. Reading 600 pages of insurance document is impossible. Though service providers have dedicated domestic and global service providers to assist and chatbots to address the FAQs, transparency is considered to be a must-have for providers. "Unlike health, travel is a pull product. Complications might not result in good results," says Kapoor. Customer service, especially during the post sales journey is really important, he adds as much as tailoring the protection based on changing circumstances. "For example, in the last one and a half years, around Paris there are a lot of thefts reported and loss of personal belongings. Our recommendations prioritised this. Going ahead, in the pipeline is addition of a no-charge global call over the Internet to help. We are also trying to build a tech channel with responses for policy choices based on segmentation and deep-dive data," explains Kapoor. Technology indeed has given the insurance brands a progressive path to follow. For brands, it has resulted in a significant drop of approximately ten years in the average age of customers, says Alapatt. "Our live video connect platform has witnessed a growth of 2.5x compared to last year for seamless connectivity," he adds. Most of the brands use the tech leverage to analyse real-time market trends and customer preferences and reach them too. "Especially, since competition is increasing with D2C platforms and travel aggregators offering bundled travel insurance options and competitive pricing," points out Sanjiv. From Google search campaigns, influencer marketing to YouTube, brands are focused on getting the most out of the burgeoning market. In the last four years, the market has undergone a swift evolution and the take-aways are many. COVID is no longer a roadblock to the travelers. In fact, the post-pandemic time peaked last year with revenge-travels. From primary coverage, COVID now comes only as an add-on benefit in the claims. "Historically, product construct in insurance used to be very static. But now there is an element of modularity. We see this in both travel and health insurance. Customers can plug and play and create the product themselves. It is a new move but we have yet to see how it will impact the industry," says Kapoor. "Government of India's UDAAN scheme strengthening domestic connectivity from various hubs, also connectivity to offbeat international destinations from India has expanded the gamut and scope," says Alapatt. But in order to boost adoption and experience pronounced growth, similar to motor and two-wheeler insurances that are mandated, the industry consensus is for travel insurance to be made mandatory, especially for international travel.

The Netherlands has recently made headlines by allowing its citizens visa-free travel to 191 countries, a policy that positions the Dutch passport as one of the most powerful in the world, as of August 2024 Henley Passport Index report. This landmark decision is expected to have far-reaching implications for the nation’s airlines, economy, and hospitality sector, particularly in the context of the global travel industry. Visa-Free Access to 191 Countries: A Global Passport Powerhouse The Netherlands’ decision to grant visa-free access to 191 countries marks a significant milestone, placing it at the top of the Henley Passport Index. The Henley Passport Index is a global ranking of countries according to the travel freedom enjoyed by their citizens. The list of 191 countries that Dutch citizens can visit without a visa includes major international destinations across continents, thereby enhancing the mobility of Dutch travelers. Hospitality Industry Set for a Boom The hospitality industry in the Netherlands is expected to experience a significant positive impact from the visa-free travel policy. Major hotel chains, including NH Hotels, CitizenM, and Van der Valk Hotels, are likely to see an increase in occupancy rates as more international tourists flock to the Netherlands. The visa-free travel policy will make the Netherlands an even more attractive destination for international conferences, events, and leisure travel. This is expected to result in higher demand for hotel accommodations, conference facilities, and other hospitality services. Major cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague are likely to benefit the most, with an increase in both leisure and business travelers. The rise in tourist numbers will also stimulate the growth of the hospitality industry in other parts of the country, including popular tourist destinations such as Utrecht, Maastricht, and the Dutch countryside. This will lead to increased investment in new hotel projects, as well as the expansion and renovation of existing properties. A New Era of Travel Freedom for the Netherlands The Netherlands’ decision to allow visa-free travel to 191 countries marks the beginning of a new era of travel freedom for its citizens. This policy is expected to bring about significant benefits for the Dutch aviation, economic, and hospitality sectors, positioning the Netherlands as a key player in the global travel industry. As Dutch citizens enjoy greater travel freedom, and the country welcomes more international tourists, the Netherlands is poised to experience an economic surge that will contribute to its continued growth and prosperity. With the support of strong airlines like KLM and Transavia, and a thriving hospitality industry, the Netherlands is set to reap the rewards of its new visa-free travel policy.

India is renowned as the land of spiritual awakening, attracting seekers of inner peace and enlightenment. The realm of spiritual tourism is transforming quickly, attracting individuals from diverse backgrounds and age groups to India’s profound spiritual heritage. What was once seen as a pursuit primarily for the elderly has now captured the interest of younger generations, who are in search of balance, wellness, and a deeper sense of purpose in their hectic lives. As a result, spiritual tourism is emerging as a significant driver of growth in India's hospitality and travel sectors. According to industry reports, spiritual tourism now accounts for a substantial 60% of domestic tourism. This sector is set to play a pivotal role in the development of several temple towns across India, aided by strong government policy support and significant infrastructure developments. Cities such as Varanasi, Tirupati, Rishikesh, and Bodh Gaya, long known for their religious importance, have transformed into bustling hubs of spiritual tourism. This increased activity has driven demand for high-quality accommodations and services tailored to meet the needs of travellers seeking spiritual and wellness experiences. The hospitality sector is making substantial investments in smaller towns, recognizing their potential to become major travel destinations as spiritual tourism continues to rise. Many hotel brands are expanding their presence in key pilgrimage and spiritual cities. Hotels and resorts are adapting to meet the distinct needs of spiritual tourists by providing culturally immersive experiences, reflected in their interior designs and food and beverage offerings, and easy access to nearby temples and pilgrimage sites. These services allow travellers to explore the religious and spiritual aspects of these destinations while rejuvenating their minds and bodies, making the experience holistic and enriching.

In September, following concerns from Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card holders about being reclassified as 'foreigners,' the Ministry of External Affairs clarified that no changes had been made to OCI regulations. Yet, many people had confusion with regard to the rights and privileges of OCI cardholders, and what flexibility it offers to the foreign nationals of Indian origin. Read on to find out all the details. Introduced in 2005, the OCI card allows individuals of Indian origin—who were citizens of India on or after January 26, 1950—to register themselves as Overseas Citizens of India, which also offer them certain privileges. This proposal was initially proposed by Home Minister LK Advani, which aimed to create a form of dual citizenship for the Indian diaspora. Foreign nationals with Indian origin, who hold an OCI card are granted a lifetime, multiple-entry visa to India, which means they no longer require to repeatedly go through the process of seeking a visa to enter India. Further, no matter how long they have been in the country, they are exempt from registering with the local police. If reports are to go by, there are currently more than 4.5 million OCI cardholders registered globally, with a large number residing in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.

As per the latest development, Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary will see cheetahs being reintroduced in a move to promote tourism in the region. This was announced by Mandsaur Collector Aditi Garg, following the inauguration of the Gandhi Sagar Forest Retreat 3.0 event. And if this goes as planned, it will make Gandhi Sagar the second site in India to host cheetahs, after Kuno National Park. The event, organized to boost tourism, began with a sacred 'Aarti' ritual at the Chambal River on Monday evening. Garg added that the governments of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are making all the efforts to ensure better connectivity between Gandhisagar in Madhya Pradesh and Kota in Rajasthan. It’s expected that this initiative will attract more visitors and help unlock the tourism potential of both regions. Discussions between the collectors of Mandsaur and Kota are also planned to further enhance the tourism prospects of the areas. According to Garg, transformative initiatives are underway in Gandhi Sagar, including the introduction of cheetahs, which will make it only the second site in the country to house the species after Kuno. Garg also mentioned about the rich archaeological and cultural legacy of this region, which included some of the popular highlights like Pashupatinath Temple, Chaturbhuj Nala, and Hinglaj Temple. Since tourists get a beautiful mix of historical value and scenic beauty, these landmarks further enhance the area's allure.

Eleven years after he started working, Mumbai-based Ramesh Rajguru took his first family vacation ever with his mother, two children and wife to Kerala. This was in 2022, two years after the pandemic hit, and a year after the lockdown ended. “When we were stuck at home, I realised that I hadn’t taken a family vacation, except visiting temples or weekend trips to Alibaug. When we were children, summer vacations were trips to granny’s home in the village, or uncle’s home in Nasik. But now I want to travel and explore,” he said. He kept up with his promise. They covered the east as they visited West Bengal in 2023. He is now busy making plans to head to Rajasthan this year for their annual holiday. “It’s not just a post-pandemic thing. I want to make it an annual affair and it’s a great time to relax and enjoy,” he said. While most post-pandemic consumption trends have wound out, Indians’ love for holidaying is the only trend that’s chugging along unabated. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, domestic tourism has picked up very well since the pandemic. “The sector’s contribution to India’s GDP reached just over Rs 19.13 trillion in 2023—almost 10% ahead of 2019 levels,” WTTC said. It also predicts that as of 2024, travel and tourism will contribute almost Rs 21.15 trillion to the Indian economy in 2024, an increase of 21% from 2019.

There’s no doubt that Indians are travelling more than ever. This travel is not just limited to domestic destinations; travelling overseas is growing as a preference for them. Recent data shows that the number of Indians taking two or more international trips has grown by 32 per cent, over the past year, to destinations such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Thailand, and the USA. The UAE, which is already one of the preferred locations for Indians travelling abroad, now seems set to welcome even more Indian travellers due to recent changes in its visa policy for additional Indian nationals. The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) announced on Thursday that an increased number of Indian nationals will now be eligible for visas on arrival in the UAE. Indian citizens with tourist visas for the UK and EU countries can now obtain a visa on arrival, which was previously available to individuals holding residence or tourist visas for the US, as well as those with residencies in the UK and EU.

The Federation of Hotel & Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI), the third largest hospitality association in the world, began its 54th Annual Convention at the Taj Cidade de Goa, Horizon. The three-day event, running from October 16th to 18th, was inaugurated by Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Government of India, in the presence of Dr. Pramod Sawant, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Goa. The convention has brought together approximately 800 delegates to discuss the future of India’s tourism and hospitality industry. The welcome address was delivered by Mr. D.S. Advani, Chairman of the Convention Organizing Committee (COC), and Mr. Pradeep Shetty, President of FHRAI. The theme for this year’s convention is “Tourism @2047: Incredible to Inevitable India – Driving Growth and Sustainability in a Mission Mode.” The focus is on identifying strategies that will foster sustainable growth and innovation in India’s tourism sector, aligning with the national goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. Discussions emphasised on how tourism can drive economic growth and sustainability in a mission-oriented way. During the inauguration, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Minister of Culture and Minister of Tourism highlighted the importance of tourism in shaping India’s future. He said: ” The challenges faced by the tourism industry were clear, and there was a strong consensus on the necessity of granting industry status by the state government to effectively address these issues. Over the years, we have collaborated with various states, sharing best practices and government policies. On World Tourism Day, we compiled these insights and disseminated them widely, urging states to implement these strategies to bolster the sector. Our follow-ups have been consistent, emphasising the importance of these practices. Regarding our ongoing GST and infrastructure challenges, I took the initiative to request a meeting with the Finance Minister before this event. Even amidst her commitments at the World Bank Summit. Our in-depth conversation about infrastructure status to this industry and its implications was met with genuine attentiveness, and I am optimistic about positive outcomes from our discussions”. “Under the leadership of our Prime Minister, India’s global standing is on the rise. Initiatives like ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ and ‘Chalo India’ aim to empower the Indian diaspora to promote our country. Notably, we recently offered one lakh visas for free in celebration of World Tourism Day, and we are actively working with the Ministry of External Affairs to attract key international markets. As we strive to decongest popular tourist destinations and develop new offerings, I am committed to collaborating with states to propose large-scale projects. We must also focus on cultivating new tourism destinations, particularly in rural and lesser-known areas, to diversify our tourism landscape. In closing, I extend my gratitude to the Government of Goa and the Chief Minister for hosting this conference, and I commend FHRAI for its relentless efforts. It is an honour to be part of this vital conversation.” he added.

Airline operators in Spain expect to sell 12% more seats this winter than a year earlier as travellers look to steer well clear of conflict zones, the head of Spain's airlines industry group (ALA) said on Tuesday. Tourist destinations such as the Canary Islands will see more flights as some airlines re-route planes from Israel and other destinations in the Middle East, ALA President Javier Gandara told a press conference in Madrid. For the winter, "there have been a number of changes in airline schedules, many of them caused by the conflict in the Middle East, and Spain has had additional schedules," he said. An ALA estimate published on Oct. 15 forecast sales of 137 million seats through March, an increase on the 134 million predicted by Spanish airport operator Aena from data provided by airlines in August, before the Middle East conflict spread. Spain received a record 64.3 million foreign tourists from January to August, up 11% from the same period in 2023, putting it on track for another record year for visitors despite growing local discontent over the impact of tourism in some hotspots.

As per the latest development, Germany in a bid to solve workforce shortage, has stepped up its efforts to attract more skilled workers, particularly from India. If reports are to go by, the German Government has announced to increase the annual cap on skilled labour visas to 90,000 from 20,000 for Indian professionals. This initiative will target all those critical gaps that crucial sectors are facing such as nursing, information technology, and caregiving. Reportedly, the new measures are aimed at making it easier for Indian professionals to migrate to the country and contribute to its economy. Referring to this, German Ambassador to India, Philipp Ackermann, informed that the number of visas issued to skilled migrants from India in all likelihood will increase significantly. Currently, the visa cap per year stands at 20,000, whereas the government is all set to raise it to 90,000 annually. These visas will be focused primarily on sectors facing acute labour shortages in Germany, whereas Indian professionals are highly sought after to fill these gaps. In response to labour demands, the German Government has launched a number of programs to attract Indian labourers. One of the crucial adjustments that it has made is reducing the visa processing time for Indian applicants, under which candidates are required to wait only two weeks to get their visas approved, compared to earlier when the said time line used to be nine months.

As per the latest development, the Indian Government has announced an extension of the regional air connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) for another 10 years. Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu informed about this during an event. In areas that previously had few or no flights for connectivity, the government is attempting to increase regional air travel, enhance connectivity, and foster economic growth with this strategy. While speaking at an event in the national capital marking eight years of UDAN, the Minister highlighted that this scheme of the government has contributed significantly to the growth of regional airlines. Not only this, this initiative also gave a boost to job creation, and tourism. Since its launch on October 21, 2016, UDAN has effectively run flights on about 601 itineraries and 71 airports, increasing the affordability and accessibility of air travel for the typical Indian tourist. Connecting smaller towns and cities with larger hubs is the main objective of this plan, which also aims to make air travel more accessible to people living in remote places. Originally intended to last for ten years, the UDAN initiative will now view an extension as a step towards improving regional connections and maintaining the momentum of aviation industry development.
